Earlier this season, Calciomercato revealed that Crystal Palace were ‘following’ Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst.

The Netherlands international has been in fine form for the Bundesliga outfit this season, smashing in 14 goals while also recording five assists.

The Eagles never managed to bring Weghorst to Selhurst Park in January, instead opting to secure Cenk Tosun on a six-month loan deal from Everton – the Turkey international scored on his first start against Manchester City.

However, the south Londoners should definitely continue to track the progress of a man who was once likened to Edin Dzeko by former Wolfsburg attacker Grafite, who played alongside the Bosnian in Germany.

“Wout is great, I love the way he plays – it reminds me of Edin. I think he can score more next season. He’s not quite at Edin’s level yet, but he’s on the right path to become a top striker. He’s focused, he’s got technique, he’s got power – I like it.”

Roy Hodgson’s side are the joint-lowest scorers in the Premier League this season with only 24 goals in 27 outings, while their top-scorer has six to his name – Jordan Ayew.

If they weren’t convinced about Weghorst in January, then surely Crystal Palace must be keen to keep following the Dutchman given his form since the transfer window closed.

In five appearances throughout February, the 27-year-old notched three goals and also grabbed two assists.

All three of his strikes came as he bagged a hat-trick against Hoffenheim, a match in which he had eight shots and got six of them on target – seeing as Crystal Palace have had the third-fewest shots on target in the Premier League this season, he appears to be just what the Eagles need. Someone who isn’t afraid to have a go.

With Tosun set to return to Everton in the summer, and Connor Wickham currently out of the picture on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, another striker wouldn’t go amiss at Selhurst Park.

It remains to be seen what happens, although the Eagles would be wise to keep tracking Weghorst until the end of the season given how well he has been performing since January ended.
