James Pearce has written in The Athletic that Financial Fair Play is one of the key factors behind Tom Werner and John Henry’s decision to buy Liverpool.

Now, in the aftermath of Manchester City’s two-season UEFA Champions League ban, Pearce has revealed that the implementation of FFP (Financial Fair Play) was one of the key factors behind Werner and Henry’s decision to acquire the Anfield outfit.

City could learn from Reds

The Citizens’ sanction has sent shockwaves through the footballing world. Not only have they been banned from Europe’s premier club competition, they have also been fined a huge £25m – this is not the first time they have been found guilty of such charges, as they paid £17m in 2014 for similar breaches too.

The Manchester outfit have spent huge amounts of money over the past decade. From 2010 to 2020, they had a net spend of over £1 billion, making them only club in world football to do so, whilst Liverpool’s number was just £297.51m. Despite being one of the biggest clubs on the planet, that ranks them in just 12th position.

Yes, they have spent large amounts of money on the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson – who cost £75m and £67m respectively, both record numbers for players in their positions at the time – but they were in part counteracted by the £105m sale, rising to £142m, of Philippe Coutinho. Look at others such as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah – both of them cost under £40m, yet both finished in the top five of the Ballon d’Or last year.

FSG have shown that astute ownership can still take a side to the top, and they have respected the rules to great effect.
